About this item

  • Reducing agent and antioxidant: Sodium metabisulphite (SMBS), a white powder that releases sulphite / SO2 in water as a strong reducing agent.
  • Removes chlorine and oxygen: Neutralises free chlorine and scavenges dissolved oxygen, and acts as a preservative and antioxidant in industrial processes.
  • Common uses: RO feed dechlorination, textile bleaching anti-chlor, pulp and paper, leather, photography and chemical processing.
  • Dosing guide: About 1.5–3 ppm SMBS per 1 ppm free chlorine in water treatment; prepare fresh solution daily.
  • Industrial grade powder: Industrial grade white to off-white powder in 500 g to 25 kg packs. GST invoice.

Industries: Water treatment

Storage & handling
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place in tightly sealed bags.
Moisture and air slowly oxidise it to sulphate and release SO2.
Keep away from acids and oxidisers.
Safety & first aid
Hazard: Harmful if swallowed; causes serious eye damage; contact with acids releases toxic sulphur dioxide gas; may trigger asthma in sensitive persons.
PPE: Chemical goggles, nitrile gloves, dust mask/respirator; use with good ventilation.
First aid: Eyes – rinse immediately with water for 15 min and get medical help; Skin – wash with plenty of water; Inhalation – move to fresh air, get medical help if breathing is difficult; Ingestion – rinse mouth, drink water, get medical help
Spills: Sweep or vacuum up avoiding dust; collect in a labelled container; rinse residue with water.
Do not mix with: Acids (releases SO2 gas), oxidisers, chlorine bleach / hypochlorite concentrates, nitrites.
