  • Widely used preservative: Sodium benzoate (E211), white free-flowing granules or powder, freely soluble in water.
  • Controls yeasts and moulds: Inhibits yeasts, moulds and some bacteria in acidic products (best below pH 4.5), extending shelf life.
  • Food, beverage and cosmetics: Used in beverages, syrups, sauces, pickles, shampoos, lotions and liquid detergent formulations, within regulatory limits.
  • Typical use level: Generally 0.05–0.5%; follow FSSAI limits for foods and BIS/CDSCO limits for cosmetics.
