Instant silver dip: what it works on, what it doesn't, and how to use it safely
A silver dip removes black tarnish from silver jewellery, pooja items and utensils in seconds, with no rubbing. But not everything that looks like silver is silver. This guide shows you which items to dip, which to keep away, and how to get a bright, safe result every time.

Why silver turns black
Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air, from pollution, cooking gas, eggs, onions, rubber bands, wool and even sweat. This forms a thin layer called tarnish, which turns silver yellow, then brown and finally black. The silver underneath is fine; it's only the surface layer that changes colour.
Stage 1
Light yellow tint
Stage 2
Brown patches
Stage 3
Grey-black film
Stage 4
Fully black
A silver dip works fastest on stages 1 to 3, and is especially useful where a cloth can't reach: chains, filigree (tarkashi), payal links, carvings and engraved pooja items.
First, check: is it real silver?
Many modern, machine-made items look exactly like silver but are made of other metals. Check before you dip.
🔍 Look for a hallmark
Real silver is usually stamped with its purity, such as 999, 970, 925 or 800, or "Sterling". Since September 2025, India also has BIS hallmarking for silver with a unique HUID code.
🏷 Read the other marks
EPNS, "silver plated" or "SP" means a thin silver coating. GS, "German silver" or "nickel silver" means no silver at all. "Stainless" or "18/8" means steel.
🧲 Try a magnet
Silver is not magnetic. If a magnet sticks, the item is steel or iron, not silver. (Some fake metals are also non-magnetic, so this test only rules items out.)
🎨 Watch how it tarnishes
Real silver goes yellow, brown and then black. Green or blue spots, peeling or a copper colour showing through mean it's plated or a base metal.
Not sure? Test first. Dip a small, hidden part of the item for 2–3 seconds, rinse and check. If it turns dull, patchy or a different colour, stop. Or send us a photo on WhatsApp and we'll help.
What you can dip, what needs care, and what to keep away
✔ Works great on
- Pure silver (999) and sterling silver (925)
- Silver chains, payal, bichhiya, kada and rings
- Filigree (tarkashi) and finely carved silver
- Solid pooja items: thali, diya, kalash, katori, glass
- Silver utensils and cutlery
- Silver coins, bars and gift coins (not collector coins)
- Silver set with diamonds or CZ
⚠ Use with care
- Silver-plated (EPNS) items: the coating is very thin. Quick dip only, never scrub, and don't dip often.
- Hollow items (ghungroo payal, hollow bangles, hollow idols, candle stands): don't immerse. Liquid gets trapped inside. Apply with a cotton bud and rinse.
- Rhodium-plated silver (very bright white modern jewellery): it rarely tarnishes. Soap and water is usually enough.
- Gold-plated silver: dab only the tarnished silver parts.
- Antique and heritage silver: the old patina adds value. Ask an expert first.
✘ Do not dip
- German silver / nickel silver
- Imitation, artificial or "silver-tone" jewellery
- Oxidised (black) silver jewellery: it removes the black design
- Bidri ware and niello (black inlay work)
- Stainless steel, aluminium, brass, copper
- Pearls, opal, turquoise, coral, lapis, emerald, amber
- Kundan, polki, jadau and meenakari pieces
- Items with wood, ivory, bone, lac, thread or glue
Looks like silver, but isn't: modern "silver-look" items
Most machine-made gift sets, utensils and fashion jewellery today look like silver but are made of other metals or have only a thin coating. Cleansol Silver Dip is made specifically for real silver tarnish. On these items there is no silver tarnish to remove, and the dip can leave them dull, patchy or discoloured. Here's how to recognise them and what to use instead.
| Item | What it really is | How to spot it | Clean it with |
|---|---|---|---|
| German silver (glasses, plates, pooja sets, dinner sets) | Copper, nickel and zinc alloy, with no silver | Marked GS or NS; low price; yellowish or greenish tarnish | Copper, Brass & Steel Cleaner, mild soap |
| Silver-plated gift items (trays, boxes, frames, corporate gifts) | Thin silver layer over brass or copper | Marked EPNS or "silver plated"; copper colour on worn edges | Soft silver cloth; a very quick dip only if tarnished |
| Imitation / fashion jewellery | Brass or alloy with silver-colour plating and lacquer, stones often glued | No purity mark; light weight; plating peels; turns green on skin | Dry soft cloth only; keep away from water and chemicals |
| Oxidised silver jewellery | Silver (or alloy) deliberately blackened for an antique look | Black in the recesses by design | Soft cloth on the raised parts only |
| Stainless steel (cutlery, bottles, utensils) | Steel | A magnet often sticks; marked "stainless"; doesn't turn black | Dishwash gel or steel cleaner |
| Rhodium-plated jewellery | Silver (or other metal) with a bright white rhodium layer | Extra bright, mirror-white shine; rarely tarnishes | Mild soap and lukewarm water |
How to use Cleansol Silver Dip: 6 simple steps
Prepare. Wear rubber gloves and work in a ventilated place. Pour just enough dip to cover the item into a glass or plastic bowl, not a metal one. Never pour used liquid back into the bottle.
Dip briefly. Hold the item with plastic tongs, or place small pieces in a plastic tea strainer, and dip for a few seconds. Lift out and check.
Repeat only if needed. For heavy tarnish, dip again for a few more seconds. Take it out as soon as the tarnish is gone. Never leave silver soaking.
Rinse immediately. Rinse thoroughly under running water for at least 30 seconds, including inside chains and links. This is the most important step.
Wash with mild soap. Wash in lukewarm water with a drop of dishwash liquid and rinse again. Wash utensils and pooja items used for food or prasad especially well.
Dry and buff. Dry completely with a soft cotton or microfibre cloth, then buff gently. Buffing brings back the mirror shine and helps the silver stay bright longer.
Pro tip: if your silver looks a little matte or whitish after dipping, it was left in too long or not rinsed enough. Rinse, wash with mild soap and buff with a soft cloth to bring the shine back. Next time, dip for fewer seconds.
Do's and don'ts
✔ Do
- Check that the item is real silver before dipping.
- Wear gloves and keep the room ventilated.
- Use a glass or plastic bowl and plastic tongs.
- Dip for seconds, not minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly, wash with mild soap and dry completely.
- Close the bottle tightly after use.
- Store the bottle out of reach of children, away from food.
✘ Don't
- Never mix silver dip with bleach or any other cleaner.
- Don't leave silver soaking in the dip.
- Don't dip German silver, imitation, oxidised or stone-studded jewellery.
- Don't immerse hollow items or pieces with glue, lac or thread.
- Don't use aluminium or steel bowls.
- Don't pour used liquid back into the bottle.
- Don't let it touch eyes or skin. If it does, rinse with plenty of water.
Keep silver bright for longer
Store airtight
Keep silver in zip-lock pouches or airtight boxes. A piece of chalk inside absorbs moisture.
Wear it often
Jewellery that is worn regularly tarnishes less than jewellery kept in a drawer.
Jewellery on last
Put it on after perfume, hairspray and cream. Remove it before swimming.
Avoid rubber and wool
Rubber bands, rubber mats and woollen cloth speed up tarnish.
