How to clean glass and mirrors without streaks

Cloudy patches, smudges and streaks are not a sign of dirty glass. They usually come from the wrong cloth, too much cleaner or cleaning in the wrong light. A few simple changes give you crystal-clear glass every time.

Why glass gets streaks

Dirty or linty cloth

Cotton cloths and old rags leave lint and spread grease around instead of lifting it.

Too much cleaner

Extra liquid is hard to wipe off fully and dries into a hazy film.

Direct sunlight

On hot, sunny glass the cleaner dries before you can wipe it, leaving marks.

Hard water and soap

Water spots on windows and soap film on shower glass need a different cleaner first.

What you need

🧴 Glass cleaner

A streak-free, ammonia-free glass cleaner in a spray bottle.

🧽 Two microfibre cloths

One to clean and one dry cloth to buff. Lint-free is the key.

🪟 Squeegee

For large windows, glass doors and shower panels.

🧹 Soft brush

To clear dust from window frames and tracks before you start.

How to clean glass: 6 simple steps

1

Dust first. Brush or wipe dust off the glass, frame and window tracks, so it doesn't turn into mud.

2

Choose the right time. Clean in the shade, or in the morning or evening, not on hot glass in direct sun.

3

Spray lightly. A light, even mist is enough. On mirrors near walls or frames, spray onto the cloth instead.

4

Wipe top to bottom. Use a folded microfibre cloth in an "S" pattern from top to bottom, so drips land on the area still to be cleaned.

5

Buff dry. Polish with a second dry microfibre cloth for a streak-free shine. On big panes, use a squeegee and wipe the blade after each stroke.

6

Check from an angle. Look at the glass from the side, in daylight, and touch up any missed spots.

Pro tip: clean the inside of a window with side-to-side strokes and the outside with up-and-down strokes. If a streak remains, you'll know immediately which side it is on.

Which surface needs what

Surface How to clean Avoid
Windows and glass doors Glass cleaner, microfibre cloth, squeegee for large panes Cleaning in hot sun
Mirrors Spray onto the cloth, wipe, then buff dry Liquid seeping into the mirror edges
Shower glass Remove hard water and soap scum with a bathroom cleaner first, then glass cleaner Abrasive powders and scrubbers
Glass tables and showcases Glass cleaner and microfibre cloth, daily wipe for fingerprints Paper towels that leave lint
Car windows Glass cleaner inside, windshield washer fluid in the wiper tank Dishwash liquid in the wiper tank
TV and laptop screens Switch off, lightly dampen a cloth, follow the maker's advice Spraying directly on the screen

Do's and don'ts

✔ Do

  • Use clean, lint-free microfibre cloths and wash them often.
  • Spray lightly. A little cleaner goes a long way.
  • Clean in the shade or when the glass is cool.
  • Dust frames and tracks before cleaning the glass.
  • Use a safe, steady ladder for high windows, with someone holding it.
  • Keep the cleaner closed and out of reach of children.

✘ Don't

  • Never mix glass cleaner with bleach or other cleaning products.
  • Don't use steel wool, scouring pads or abrasive powder. They scratch glass.
  • Don't use dishwash liquid or soap. It leaves a film that causes streaks.
  • Don't spray directly onto electronics, switches or wooden frames.
  • Don't lean out of windows to clean the outside of high floors.
  • Don't spray towards eyes or the face.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my glass still have streaks?

The usual causes are a dirty or linty cloth, too much spray, or cleaning in direct sun. Use a fresh microfibre cloth, spray lightly and buff dry with a second cloth.

What does "ammonia-free" mean?

The cleaner does not contain ammonia, so it has no harsh, sharp smell. Ammonia-free cleaners are often preferred for tinted films, but always check the film maker's advice.

Can I use it on other surfaces?

Yes, on most shiny, hard surfaces such as glossy tiles, steel and laminate. Test on a small hidden area first and avoid unsealed wood and electronics.

Which pack size should I buy?

5 L is ideal for homes and small offices to refill a spray bottle. 10 L, 25 L and 50 L packs suit hotels, showrooms and housekeeping teams. For regular bulk supply, request a quote.
